Guwahati: Within a month and a half of its victory in Assam, Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi was so disillusioned with the party that she decided to quit the party. The Congress, which has been grappling with internal strife in Punjab, Rajasthan to Mumbai, suffered another major setback when its MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi resigned in Assam after levelled serious allegations against the party's top leadership. He will join the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) next week. Rupjyoti Kurmi, who won from Mariani assembly seat in Jorhat district, submitted her resignation to Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimari just a month and a half after winning as MLA for the fourth time in a row. Kurmi was accompanied by two BJP MLA Parliamentary Affairs Minister Piyush Hazarika and CM Himanta Biswa Sarma political secretary Jayant Malla Barua. Both these MLA were earlier in the Congress and joined the BJP along with Sarma in 2015. After resigning, Kurmi said, "I was assured of the post of Leader of opposition in the Assembly but was later refused. I applied for the post of state president of the party, but that too was not found. The party did not include my name in the list of members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the State Assembly. It seems that the Congress does not want leaders like me who belong to a particular community to rise up."
