Congress Promises Legal Guarantee of MSP for Farmers, Says Rahul Gandhi

Raipur:  Amidst the ongoing 'Delhi Chalo' march by farmers towards the National Capital to advocate for their demands, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made a significant announcement on Tuesday. He stated that if the party is elected to power, it will provide a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) to every farmer in accordance with the Swaminathan Commission's recommendations.

In a social media post, Rahul Gandhi declared, "Today marks a historic moment for our farmer brothers! The Congress party has committed to ensuring a legal guarantee of MSP for every crop, as per the Swaminathan Commission's recommendations. This measure will positively impact the lives of 15 crore farming families, ushering in prosperity. This marks the Congress party's first pledge on the path to justice."

Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the Central government, denouncing it as "dictatorial." He accused the Modi government of attempting to suppress the farmers' voices through aggressive measures such as barbed wire, tear gas from drones, and armed confrontation. Kharge highlighted the government's failure to fulfill promises made to the farming community, including the doubling of farmers' income by 2022, implementing MSP based on input costs plus 50 percent, and providing legal status to MSP.

Kharge emphasized the need to stand in solidarity with the 62 crore farmers and announced the Congress party's support for the "Kisan Nyay" movement in Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh. He asserted the party's commitment to championing the cause of farmers without fear or hesitation.

Meanwhile, the Haryana police detained several protesting farmers as they marched towards Delhi on Tuesday. Reports indicated that the farmers attempted to breach multi-layered barricades using tractors and makeshift weapons. Visuals from the border depicted farmers fleeing towards adjacent farmland as police deployed tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd.

The protest, organized by the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha and Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee under the leadership of farmer union leaders Jagjeet Singh Dallewal and Sarwan Singh Pandher, demands the enactment of a law guaranteeing MSP for all crops, as recommended by the Swaminathan Commission report. The farmers argue that they ended their 2021 protest based on promises from the government to address their concerns regarding crop prices, which have yet to materialize.
