Congress slams Centre over rising fuel prices, says government imposing burden instead of providing relief

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday attacked the Central government over the hike in petrol and diesel prices, accusing it of imposing a tax burden on the corona-hit people instead of providing relief. In a tweet, party chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala wrote, "Instead of providing any relief to the common people who are suffering from corona, the government is imposing the burden of tax on the 'Jan Loot Sarkar'. The Modi government has increased petrol by Rs 22.99 and diesel by Rs 20.93 in the last one year".

Surjewala claimed that "Petrol prices have only 37.32 per cent and diesel has a base price of 44.03 per cent, the rest is tax, profit and commission".  It may be recalled that the price of petrol was increased by 24 paise a litre on Sunday while diesel by 27 paise per litre. With this increase, petrol has reached record levels in different parts of the country while in Mumbai it has gone close to Rs 99 a litre.
