New Delhi: The Congress has launched a scathing attack on the Modi government over the New York Times' claim on the Pegasus deal. Congress leaders Randeep Surjewala and Mallikarjun Kharge said the BJP government has taken democracy hostage and the Modi government's act is treason. Randeep Surjewala said it was clear that the government had lied to Parliament, also that people were cheated and citizens were lied to. Surjewala said that we will decide responsibility in the House. "We will ask the Supreme Court to take cognizance and initiate punitive action.'' Surjewala further said that Congress had been saying for a long time that the "Modi government is the perpetrator of the illegal and unconstitutional espionage racket with Israeli surveillance spyware Pegasus. This includes PM Modi himself!'' It is a shameless 'hijacking of democracy' and an act of 'treason.' Surjewala further said that the spyware Pegasus not only breaks the security of the phone along with WhatsApp but is also able to access the cellphone camera and microphone to catch all the activities around the phone, at the same time it can hack all the security features of the phone.
