Congress to hold alliance with 5 parties for Assam elections

Guwahati: The Congress party on Tuesday announced a grand alliance with five parties to hit the ruling BJP's alliance in Assam this year. The Congress party will contest the elections in conjunction with the All India Democratic Front (AIUDF), the three Left Party – Communist Party of India-Marxist, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), and Zonal Gana Morcha (AGM).

Assam Congress Unit President Ripun Bora has announced the grand alliance. He said regional parties are welcome in the Grand Alliance to exclude the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the state. Assam's Congress unit on Tuesday said it will enter into an alliance with five parties in the forth-going assembly elections a few months later to oust the BJP from power. Ripun Bora said the announcement comes after talks with several parties.

"Our doors are open to the anti-BJP parties and we invite regional parties to join us in the fight to remove the ruling party from power," Bora said, adding that the Congress is at the forefront of making communal forces out of power in the interest of the country. At the same time, he said, "people are no longer ready to vote for the BJP. Because its misrule has disturbed people and people are very disappointed with them."
