Constitution Day Honors: President Unveils Majestic Statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar at Supreme Court

New Delhi: On Constitution Day, President Droupadi Murmu paid a poignant tribute to the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, by unveiling an imposing 7-foot-tall statue of him on the premises of the Supreme Court. The distinguished ceremony, graced by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, showcased a majestic statue portraying Dr. Ambedkar in a lawyer's gown, firmly holding a copy of the Constitution—a fitting representation of his enduring legacy.

The decision to install this significant statue at the Supreme Court was prompted by persistent appeals from a group of Ambedkarite lawyers. In December of the previous year, they submitted a heartfelt letter to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, emphasizing the symbolic importance of recognizing Dr. Ambedkar's monumental contributions to the Constitution through the installation of this statue. This collective sentiment gained further momentum in September 2023 when the Supreme Court Arguing Counsel Association (SCACA) submitted a representation, amplifying the unified call for acknowledging and celebrating Dr. Ambedkar's enduring legacy.

The statue, positioned on the front lawn and garden within the Supreme Court premises, stands as a powerful symbol within the legal landscape, commemorating the visionary leader who played a pivotal role in shaping India's constitutional framework. The grand unveiling on Constitution Day adds a significant chapter to the ongoing narrative of recognizing and honoring the profound impact of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on the nation's legal and constitutional history.
