Court frames charges against four accused in Delhi riots case

New Delhi:  The court has framed charges against four accused in the 2020 communal riots in northeast Delhi. The accused have been charged with rioting, looting and arson in Gokulpuri and Bhajanpura. The court of Additional Sessions Judge Virendra Bhatt at Karkardooma has framed charges against the four accused under sections of rioting, unlawful assembly, arson, injury to public and police personnel and other sections.

In this case, the court has also acquitted the four accused for want of evidence. The court said that the prosecution has failed to produce concrete evidence to prosecute the accused. The FIR in the case was registered on the statement of the policeman, who along with other staff was on duty in the riot-prone area that day. He had the responsibility of controlling the riots and maintaining law and order.

The special public prosecutor said that several accused in the case had been arrested. After their arrest, several other policemen identified them as rioters. The public prosecutor had said that there was video footage of the accused's involvement in the riots in which the accused are seen actively participating in the vandalism and arson at the spot.
