Cyclone Remal Weakens, Assam on Alert, Check Details Here

Cyclone Remal, which has claimed over 15 lives and injured several others, is expected to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area over eastern Assam and surrounding regions by Tuesday evening, May 28.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the depression, a remnant of cyclonic storm Remal, is moving northeastward at 16 kmph. As of 1130 hours IST today, May 28, it was centered near latitude 25.1°N and longitude 91.8°E, about 90 km north of Srimangal (Bangladesh), 20 km south-southeast of Cherrapunji, and 150 km north-northeast of Agartala.

"The system is likely to move nearly northeastward and weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area over Eastern Assam and the neighborhood by this evening," the IMD stated.

Cyclone Remal, the first major cyclonic storm of the year, has killed 16 people across Bangladesh and India after making landfall near the Bay of Bengal coast.

In Assam, heavy rains and strong winds from Cyclone Remal have led to one death and injuries to 17 people in several parts of the state, according to officials.

Eleven districts, including Kamrup, Nagaon, Sonitpur, and Morigaon, have been significantly affected. In Morigaon, one person died and four others were injured due to heavy rains. In Sonitpur, a falling tree branch injured 12 students from Usha   English School.

Several districts have reported fallen trees, increased river water levels, and landslides due to incessant rainfall.

Teams from the State Disaster Response Force, along with police and forest department officials, are working to improve the situation amid ongoing storms and relentless rain.

Cyclone Remal made landfall in Bangladesh's coastal area on Sunday night and has moved northward. It is expected to weaken further into a deep depression by this evening.
