Lucknow: In Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, a young Dalit man named Suraj was brutally murdered due to his relationship with a Muslim girl. The couple had eloped, but soon after, Suraj began receiving death threats from the girl's family. Tragically, Suraj was found dead, his body hanging from a tree on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
Following a complaint from Suraj's family, the police registered a case against several individuals, including the girl's father, Chhuttan, her brother Tasleem, journalist Irshad Hussain, Ashfaq, Rehman, and 10-15 unidentified persons. The charges include various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and also invoke provisions of the SC-ST Act.
Bareilly's Additional Superintendent of Police, Mukesh Chandra Mishra, stated that an investigation is underway, with the accused to be questioned based on the facts. He also mentioned that the post-mortem report is pending, and police have been deployed in the village to maintain peace. Meanwhile, Hindu organizations have visited Suraj's family, demanding strict action against those responsible.
Suraj, a resident of Sheeshgarh in Bareilly, was discovered in Fatehganj West. The police revealed that Suraj was involved in a romantic relationship with a 16-year-old Muslim girl, and the two had gone missing on August 10. Suraj was working a private job in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand, and the girl had been living with him.
The girl's family accused Suraj of kidnapping, leading them to file a complaint at the Sheeshgarh police station. The police subsequently recovered the girl and recorded her statement in court on Friday, August 16, 2024. While the police were searching for Suraj, he remained missing.
On Saturday, August 17, 2024, Suraj's body was found hanging from a tree near Bhitauli Nagla. The police took his body into custody and sent it for post-mortem examination. A forensic team later arrived at the scene to collect evidence, and further investigations are ongoing in this case.
