NEW DELHI: The Defence Ministry on Friday, December 15, signed a significmajor deal worth more than Rs 5,300 crore with Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL). This agreement involves the procurement of electronic fuzes for the Indian Army over a 10-year period. Electronic fuzes play a crucial role in medium to heavy calibre artillery guns, providing continuous firepower essential for military operations. These fuzes are specifically intended for use in artillery guns capable of engaging in lethal combat across various terrains, including high-altitude regions along India's northern borders. The Defence Ministry, in an official statement, announced the signing of this substantial contract with Bharat Electronics Ltd based in Pune. Valued at Rs 5,336.25 crore, this deal aligns with the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, focusing on indigenous production of ammunition for the Indian Army, fulfilling a 10-year requirement. The ministry highlighted that this initiative aims to achieve self-reliance in ammunition manufacturing, acquire essential technologies, and ensure a steady supply despite disruptions in the global supply chain. Bharat Electronics Ltd will undertake the manufacturing of electronic fuzes at its facilities in Pune and the upcoming plant in Nagpur. Additionally, this project is expected to create employment opportunities, generating approximately one-and-a-half lakh man-days. It also seeks to actively involve Indian industries, particularly MSMEs, in ammunition manufacturing, further enhancing the country's ammunition production ecosystem.
