New Delhi: A 43-year-old retired soldier was shot dead by two unidentified bike-borne assailants on Monday evening near Jaffarpur Kalan in Ujwa village in south-west Delhi. The deceased has been identified as retired military Mukesh. At the time of the murder, he was singing songs with his friends in a field, when the attackers arrived there, questioned him about a man, and then opened fire on him. Police said at least five bullets were fired, three of which hit Mukesh, killing him on the spot. Police suspect that Mukesh's murder may be a case of mistaken identity and the real target of the attackers would be Mukesh's brother, who has a criminal record. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Santosh Kumar Meena said that there was a possibility that the attackers had come to kill Mukesh's brother, but he killed Mukesh. DCP Meena said that the killing was carried out at around 5.30 pm on Monday evening. Two unidentified people came there on the bike and asked Mukesh about a Rakesh. Mukesh and his friends told the bike riders that Rakesh was not with them, and suddenly the person who enquired about Rakesh fired at Mukesh with a native pistol and escaped. Mukesh's friends made noises, after which his nephew admitted him to the local hospital, where doctors declared Mukesh dead when he arrived. A case of murder has been registered in this regard and the investigation is continuing.
