The Delhi High Court will announce its decision today on the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) request to halt the trial court's order that granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case linked to the alleged excise scam. The verdict is set to be delivered at 2:30 p.m. Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain, who reserved the decision on June 21, will be delivering the verdict. This came after the ED challenged the trial court's ruling and suspended it until today's pronouncement. Arvind Kejriwal, who also leads the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was arrested by the ED on March 21. He could have been released from Tihar jail if not for the high court's interim relief granted to the central anti-money laundering agency. The trial court had approved Kejriwal's bail on June 20, requiring him to post a personal bond of ₹1 lakh. Additionally, conditions were set, including that he must not interfere with the investigation or attempt to influence witnesses. The ED argued that the trial court's decision was "perverse," "one-sided," and "flawed," asserting that the conclusions were based on irrelevant considerations. The controversy stems from changes to the excise policy, which was abandoned in 2022 following a directive from the Delhi lieutenant governor for a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities and corruption in its creation and implementation. Both the CBI and ED claim that there were violations in the revision of the excise policy, with unjust benefits provided to certain license holders.
