Devotees Flock to Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar Temple on Third Monday of Sawan

UJJAIN: The Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, saw a large number of devotees offering prayers on the third Monday of Sawan. The revered Bhasma Aarti was also performed at the temple. Simultaneously, prayers were offered at Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Uttar Pradesh and Gauri Shankar Mandir in Delhi.

On Friday, a significant crowd gathered at Mahakaleshwar Temple to celebrate Sawan Shivratri. Devotees also participated in the ritual of taking a dip in the Ganga River on this sacred occasion.

The month of Sawan, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is highly significant for worshippers. Those who honor Lord Shiva during this time are believed to receive abundant blessings. Sawan Shivratri, celebrated during this month, holds equal importance to the annual Maha Shivratri.

Sawan, typically occurring between July and August, is a time for worship, fasting, and pilgrimage dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, it is during this month that Lord Shiva drank the poison produced from the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) to save the universe from its harmful effects.

Devotees observe fasts and offer prayers seeking Lord Shiva's blessings. The rains during Sawan symbolize Shiva’s compassion and kindness. Mondays are particularly auspicious during this month, with many devotees fasting and consuming only fruits, milk, and specific fasting foods.

Common practices during Sawan include chanting Shiva mantras, singing bhajans (devotional songs), and performing Rudrabhishek (a ceremonial bathing of the Shiva Lingam with holy substances), all conducted with great devotion in homes and temples.
