Diabetes in mothers could affect their infants

Rise in sugar levels in pregnant women has impacted city doctors to warn of increased risk of gestational diabetes that may disturb the health of infant. currently, health check-up camp organised in Chelipura disclosed that out of the 300 patients tested, 66% found already diabetic.

"Of the 10 new patients diagnosed with diabetes, four were women. In this test, it waas found that on every 10 new patients having diabetesm four found women. even a girl had diabetes since childhood, while the other three women were in the age group of22 and 24 years," said B T Ankushe, one of the doctors who examined the patients.

"Two women were found to have Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) - a condition that occurs during pregnancy and usually disappears after the baby is born in a few cases," said diabetologist Nafeha Siddiqui. "As lifestyle issues such as disrupted sleep-wake cycles become more common, and the average age of the pregnant woman rises, these numbers are set to rise further, since women over 25 are already at a higher risk of gestational diabetes," Ankushe said.

"An unhealthy lifestyle that includes high junk food consumption, obesity, lack of exercise and a sedentary lifestyle could be a trigger, but there are no conclusive studies to prove the co-relation," said Siddiqui. "That lifestyle plays a big role in lifestyle  gestational diabetes is proof as women with lifestyle conditions such as polycystic ovarian disorder (PCOD) are face down to develop the condition," doctor adds.
