Birthday Special: Deepa Karmakar, the first Indian gymnast to achieve this feat at the Olympics

Deepa Karmakar is an artistic gymnast who has represented India at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He was born in Agartala in 1993. He is also known as the Golden Girl in the world. When Dipa was just six years old, her father thought he would make her a gymnast.

She is the first Indian woman gymnast to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics and is also the first Indian, male or female gymnast to do so in the last 52 years. She made it to the finals and also missed the bronze medal with a slight margin (0.150) and finished fourth.

As gymnasts she has earned quite a reputation. Deepa's participation in the Rio Olympics and reaching the final in the vault had made it a very glorious moment for India, as it happened 52 years later when an Indian gymnast had landed in the Olympics and achieved such a feat. Since Independence, 11 men from India had joined the Gymnastics Olympic Games, also in 1952 (two), 1956 (3) and 1964 (6). Since then no Indian had been able to do so.
