Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar announced her retirement from professional competition on Monday, marking the end of an inspiring chapter in her athletic career.
"After much thought, I have decided that I am retiring from gymnastics. This decision was not easy for me, but this is the right time. Gymnastics is a huge part of my life, and I am grateful for every moment—the highs, the lows, and everything in between," she shared in her retirement announcement.
Reflecting on her journey, Dipa recalled a poignant moment from her childhood. "I remember being five years old and thinking I could never become a gymnast because of my flat feet. Today, I feel very proud of my achievements. Representing India on the world stage, winning medals, and most memorably, performing the Produnova Vault at the Rio Olympics, has been the highlight of my career. My last victory at the Asian Gymnastics Championship in Tashkent was a turning point; I felt I could push my body further. However, sometimes our bodies tell us it’s time to rest, even if our hearts don’t agree," she expressed.
The 30-year-old athlete extended her gratitude to her coaches and the organizations that supported her throughout her career. "I would like to thank my coaches Bishweshwar Nandi and Soma for guiding me over the last 25 years; they have been my biggest strength. I also appreciate the support from the Tripura government, the Gymnastics Federation, the Sports Authority of India, GoSports Foundation, and Meraki Sport & Entertainment. Lastly, to my family, who has stood by me through both good and challenging times."
In her heartfelt letter, Dipa emphasized that while she is retiring, her connection to gymnastics will endure. "I hope to revive this sport by providing safe mentorship, coaching, and support to other girls like me. Thank you, everyone, for being a part of my journey. With love, Dipa," she concluded.
Dipa Karmakar made history in May by becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Asian Senior Championships, clinching the title in the women’s vault event with an average score of 13.566 in the final held in Uzbekistan. She also made headlines at the 2016 Rio Olympics, becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to compete in the Games in 52 years. Dipa showcased her skill with the challenging Produnova vault, finishing just shy of a bronze medal in fourth place, demonstrating her exceptional talent and the narrow margin that separated her from Olympic glory.
