DMK wins Vellore Lok Sabha by-election

Vellore: The DMK has won the by-election to the Vellore Lok Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu. However, the victory was very close. DMK's DM Kathir Anand defeated his nearest rival AIADMK's A.C. Shanmugam on Friday by a narrow margin of 8,141 votes. The DMK candidate got 4,85,340 votes and 47.3 percent of the votes in his favour. The AIADMK had won the seat in 2014.

The elections to the Vellore Lok Sabha seat were held on the 5th of August and there was a change in the lead of both the candidates till the counting of votes was over and the DMK candidate was declared victorious. The Election Commission said that Shanmugam had contested the two-leaf AIADMK election symbol and got 4,77,199 votes, which means 46.51 per cent of the votes in his favour.

The elections for the Vellore Lok Sabha seat were scheduled to be held in April along with 38 other Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu, but it was cancelled after a huge cache of cash was recovered during election preparations. In the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, the opposition DMK alliance had won a massive victory in the state. On the other hand, the ruling AIADMK alliance had lost the elections badly. The DMK and its allies had won 37 seats. On the other hand, AIADMK could win only one seat.
