DNA Technology founds extremely helpful in solving crimes and finding missing persons. For regulating and promoting the use of such technologies in India, on Wednesday, the Union Cabinet headed by PM Narendra Modi has approved DNA Technology (Use and Application) Regulation Bill, 2018. The bill was approved with the primary intentions of expanding DNA-based forensic technologies use and application in India which will eventually help in strengthening the justice system of the country. The enacted Bill includes mandatory accreditation and regulation for DNA laboratories. With the expansion in the use of practice the bill seeks the surety that the results of such reports would be reliable and unbiased which will be protected from misuse for maintaining the privacy rights of citizens. After the approval, the technology will help in judiciary proceedings where the cases like murder, rape, human trafficking, or grievous hurt including theft, burglary, and dacoity would be solved easily with the help of DNA technologies. The effective results of the technology will allow its use in identifying persons or matching two persons in cases like a person reported missing on the one hand and unidentified dead bodies found in various parts of the country on the other hand. The mass disasters can also witness the contribution of technology as among those many people DNA is the only thing that will help in identifying a person. Notably, India has a very small proportion where the technology is being used for such crimes. Expectations said that the provision would help in expediting the case solving and hype in conviction rates could also be witnessed as results of the same.
