Doctors, Vets Come Together To Perform Cataract Surgery On A Gorilla

Washington: According to the information just received, a team of eye doctors in California treated an unusual patient. This patient was none other than a Western lowland gorilla. An eye surgeon working with San Diego Zoo veterinarians successfully removed a cataract from the left eye of a 3-year-old gorilla named Leslie on 10 December 2019. This information was given by the zoo officials.

At the same time, when he was talked about, he said that surgery was done at the zoo's medical center and Leslie was recovering. Surgeon Chris Heichel carried out this entire procedure. He said that he had undergone eye surgery of thousands of human patients, but this was his first surgery done on gorillas.

According to information received from the sources, in a statement released by the zoo, he said that fortunately there are similarities between the anatomy of human and gorilla eyes, which enabled us to safely operate without any complication. The rest of the eye appeared in health, which would give Leslie an extraordinary vision for the rest of her life. In this process, a new artificial lens has been inserted by removing Leslie's eye lens, so that he can see clearly the rest of his life. But a cataract accumulates behind the colored part of the eye like a cloud in a clear lens, known as the iris. At the same time it is also being said that cataracts usually develop over time, as part of the normal aging process. However, they can also be caused by eye trauma. While playing with the young gorilla, a cataract may have occurred due to injury.
