TEHRAN: According to Iranian media, the next round of fresh negotiations to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement will very likely take place in Doha, Qatar. The country's Supreme National Security Council-affiliated news source, Nournews, stated that Qatar had a "better chance of hosting the upcoming meetings" because of its "ongoing attempts to resume talks on lifting sanctions," report Xinhua. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and visiting European Union foreign policy leader Josep Borrell stated on Saturday that the talks to save the 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), would restart in the coming days. Eight rounds of negotiations to resurrect the JCPOA have taken place between Iran and the remaining parties since April 2021 in Vienna, the capital of Austria. Iran and the major world powers agreed to the JCPOA in July 2015, with Iran agreeing to limit its nuclear programme in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. However, former American President Donald Trump withdrew Washington from the accord in May 2018 and reinstituted unilateral sanctions against Iran, which led the latter to renege on certain of its agreement-related obligations.
