Dozens of migrants are believed to have been killed at a Mexican border detention facility

USA: Several people are believed to have died after a fire broke out at an immigrant detention facility in the Mexican city of Juarez, near the US border.

The fire broke out at a Mexican National Migration Institute (INM) facility near the Stanton-Lerdo International Bridge, which connects Juarez to El Paso, Texas.

According to the local newspaper Excelsior, the death toll could range between 25 and 35 people, with up to 100 people injured due to smoke inhalation and other hazards.

An INM official confirmed 37 deaths at the scene, according to Telemundo's El Paso branch, and 27 people were taken to various hospitals in Juarez. According to the report, two patients died as a result of their injuries. At the time of writing, the INM had not issued an official statement.

According to media reports, the disaster may have begun with an attempt to flee by a group of Venezuelan detainees who had recently been placed at the facility. According to El Diario, the fire started in the men's section of the centre. It wasn't clear whether it was set on purpose or by accident.
