Approximately 15% of the global population has to lead a life with some form of disability, with 2-4% of these individuals experiencing severe hardships in their everyday lives. The United Nations states that, out of the one billion people with disabilities worldwide, 80% reside in developing countries. World Bank data indicates that the population of disabled individuals in India varies between 40 and 80 million, ranking the country with the highest population of disabled people. Living with a disability can be incredibly challenging, with everyday life presenting constant obstacles in the pursuit of basic rights and mainstream inclusion. The situation is further exacerbated for those who are disabled and come from low-income households, as they face even more significant barriers in accessing education, training, and rehabilitation services. To advocate for the rights and welfare of individuals with disabilities, every December 3rd is celebrated as the 'International Day of Persons with Disabilities'. There are also numerous NGOs committed to ensuring those living with disabilities can lead lives of dignity and have equal opportunities. The Maheshwar Laxmi Memorial Foundation, Founded by Dr Anil Kumar is one such organization. The Maheshwar Laxmi Memorial Foundation has been bringing revolutionary changes in a lot of people’s lives across different sectors. One of their main focal points is the upliftment and development of physically challenged people. Owing to this, they provide these people with self-development courses that help them increase their self-esteem. The NGO also provides job training and opportunities to physically challenged people so that they can earn their livelihood, additionally, financial assistance is also provided to them and their families. People say that where there is a will, there is a way, thus, the team trains these people in sports also. While sharing more about his NGO, the Founder Dr Anil Kumar stated, “I am a strong believer in the fact that despite their disability, every person has the right to live a dignified life and be a productive member of society. Therefore, our NGO works towards empowering these people because deep down they all have the potential to achieve everything they desire. We do things that help them face and overcome challenges, provide them with the opportunity to earn their own money, also we understand that not everyone can buy costly equipment, thus, we also arrange that for them. The ultimate goal we carry is to give disabled people a ray of hope and confidence that helps them grow stronger and more resilient.” Along with helping physically disabled people, the Maheshwar Laxmi Memorial Foundation also works in a plethora of different sectors. Dr Anil Kumar highly values education, leading his NGO to offer free computer training courses for underprivileged female students. These classes, taught by field experts, provide both theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on experience.
