Draupadi Murmu seeks support from MLAs and MPs on Chhattisgarh visit

Raipur: National Democratic Alliance (NDA) presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu reached Raipur on Friday to seek the support of MPs and MLAs of Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh. Draupadi Murmu reached Swami Vivekananda Airport here at around 9 am. Regarding this, former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh wrote, "Today, at the airport, the Presidential candidate of NDA and other supporting parties, Smt. Draupadi Murmu Ji was warmly welcomed on her arrival in Chhattisgarh. This will be the first time in Indian democracy that a tribal and that too a woman will occupy this highest position.''

In the 90-member state assembly of Chhattisgarh, the Congress has 71 MLAs and the Bharatiya Janata Party has 14, while the Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have three and two members respectively. Out of the 11 Lok Sabha MPs in the state, 9 are from the BJP and two from Congress. The Congress has four Rajya Sabha members and the BJP has one member from the state.

Senior BJP tribal leader Nand Kumar Sai said Pratibha Patil was the first woman President of India, while Draupadi Murmu would be the first woman from the Scheduled Tribe community to hold the highest office. He appealed to the MPs of the tribal-dominated state to support the candidature of Draupadi Murmu. The tribals constitute 32 per cent of Chhattisgarh's population.
