DST sings MoU Indian Navy in developing secure maritime communications using Quantum Tech

New Delhi: The Indian Navy and the Raman Research Institute (RRI), a department of science and technology (DST) independent institute, are working together to establish secure marine communications using quantum technologies.

The Ministry of Science & Technology released a statement saying, "Under this agreement, RRI's Quantum Information and Computing (QuIC) lab will lead the research efforts towards developing quantum key distribution techniques that the Indian Navy could use in the country's efforts to secure free space communications.

Vice-admiral Sandeep Naithani, chief of materiel for the Indian Navy, and professor Tarun Souradeep, director of RRI, inked the agreement, which has a five-year term.

According to the agreement, the Ministry of Science & Technology's Quantum Information and Computing (QuIC) lab's Raman Research Institute would be in charge of leading the research efforts to create quantum key distribution methods.

Prof. Souradeep said during the event that the Indian Science and Technology ecosystem has been expanding its borders recently, allowing brilliant and top-tier researchers in academic research institutions to contribute to the development of Science and Technology capabilities in crucial strategic areas for the country.

According to Professor Urbasi Sinha, group leader at the QuIC lab, this is a fantastic opportunity to employ locally created science and technology knowledge for the benefit of our country.

According to her, QuIC lab would be able to develop advance research to identify possible marine use-cases for the Indian Navy with the support of the collaboration.

A wide number of applications using single and entangled photons have been proposed and implemented by QuIC Lab, making it the first lab in India to do so. These applications are mostly geared towards establishing secure communications in crucial fields like banking, defence, and cyber security.
