Earthquake of 6.1 Magnitude Hits Nepal, Tremors Felt in Bihar

NEPAL EARTHQUAKE: A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 magnitude, on the Richter scale struck Nepal early in the morning Friday February 28. The tremors were felt in several areas, including parts of Bihar.

According to Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre, the quake hit near Kodari Highway in Sindhupalchowk district, about 65 km east of Kathmandu, at 2:51 am. The National Center for Seismology in India, however, recorded the magnitude as 5.5 with a depth of 10 km.

Videos and posts on social media showed that people in Patna, Bihar, also felt the tremors. Some reports mentioned that the earthquake was even experienced in Bhutan and Bangladesh.

No Major Damage Reported

There are no reports of serious damage or casualties so far. However, Pasang Nurpu Sherpa, chairman of Bhote Koshi rural municipality, said the earthquake caused a landslide at Dugunagadi Bhir across the river. Luckily, no houses were affected.

As of now, local authorities said the earthquake triggered a landslide at Dugunagadi Bhir, but no homes were affected in that area.

Earlier in this January 2025, Tibet’s Himalayan region was hit by six earthquakes. The strongest one had a magnitude of 7.1 and sadly took the lives of more than 125 people.

Notably. Nepal is in a high-risk seismic zone and has experienced devastating earthquakes in the past. The most severe was in 2015 when a 7.8 magnitude quake killed over 9,000 people and destroyed more than a million buildings.
