Earthquake Shakes Uttarkashi, Myanmar, Spark Rockfalls in Landslide-Prone Areas

UTTARKASHI/GUWAHATI:  An earthquake struck Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand on Friday (January 24)  morning, triggering fear among residents. Panicked by the tremors, many people rushed out of their homes to seek safety. The quake, recorded at a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter scale, occurred at approximately 7.42 am, as confirmed by the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

The earthquake originated at a depth of 5 kilometers, with its epicenter located at latitude 30.85 N and longitude 78.60 E.

Sharing the details on X, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said, "EQ of M: 3.5, On: 24/01/2025 08:19:28 IST, Lat: 30.85 N, Long: 78.60 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand."

4.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Myanmar; Tremors Felt Across Northeast India

 A moderate earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale  also shook Myanmar in the early hours of Friday, January 24, 2025, at 12:53 AM IST. The quake's epicenter was pinpointed at 24.68°N latitude and 94.87°E longitude, with a depth of 106 kilometers, as per the seismic monitoring data.

The tremors were strongly felt across Assam and several other Northeastern states of India, leading to moments of panic among the local residents. Despite the unsettling experience, no reports of property damage or injuries have surfaced so far from the affected areas.

Local authorities have urged the public to stay vigilant and prioritize their safety. Officials are closely monitoring the situation and conducting assessments to determine if any damage has occurred. This marks the second recent earthquake to hit the district, causing significant disruption. The tremors were powerful enough to force people out of their homes, halting daily routines.

The quake also triggered rockfalls from the landslide-prone Varunavat Mountain, a site notorious for frequent landslides in the past.

However, there have been no reports of property damages or casualties so far. Authorities are continuing their inspections to ensure the safety of residents and evaluate any potential risks.
