Aadhaar card to be linked to voter ID, Bill passed in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: The "Election Act Amendment Bill, 2021" has also been passed in the Upper House of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha, on Tuesday. It will now be sent to President Ram Nath Kovind to give it the shape of law and as soon as it is signed, the Bill will become a law. Earlier on Monday, the Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha.

While introducing the Bill, the government stressed that linking Aadhaar and voter cards will curb bogus voters. Law Minister Kiren Rijiju had submitted it in the Lok Sabha saying that the arguments made by the members to oppose it were an attempt to misrepresent the apex court's decision. The Bill is in line with the Supreme Court judgement. In the Lok Sabha, parties like Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), AIMIM, RSP, BSP protested against the 'Election Law (Amendment) Bill, 2021.'

Congress demanded that the bill be referred to the Standing Committee of Parliament for consideration. Protesting opposition parties said, "The initiative to link Aadhaar card with the voter card is a violation of the Supreme Court judgement. More mistakes have been reported in the Aadhaar cards than voter cards.''

What will happen to the new Election Law (Amendment) Bill, 2021?

The Bill provides for the linking of Voter ID cards with Aadhaar cards to prevent bogus voting and duplication in electoral rolls. At the same time, there is a provision to register 4 names in the electoral rolls 4 times a year. The Bill will also make the electoral law 'gender neutral' for service voters. This will also enable the husbands of women employees to join the service voter. It was not so yet. For example, a male soldier's wife could register herself under a service voter, but the husband of a female soldier could not do so. If this law is enacted, the husbands of women soldiers will now be able to join the service voter.
