Elon Musk's Tesla Still Silent on India Plans, Govt Awaits Communication

Elon Musk's electric vehicle company, Tesla, has yet to share its plans for entering the Indian market with the government, according to officials.

Musk was scheduled to visit India on April 21-22, but he postponed due to "very heavy Tesla obligations." During his visit, he was expected to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"They (Tesla) are just silent. The (EV) policy was always meant for everybody," an official said, referring to Tesla's lack of communication about its plans under the new electric vehicle (EV) policy. The official emphasized that companies typically announce their commercial decisions independently.

Earlier in April, Musk confirmed his planned visit to India in a post on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his eagerness to meet PM Modi. Musk had previously met with PM Modi in June last year and mentioned his intention to visit India in 2024, expressing confidence that Tesla would soon enter the Indian market.

During his postponed visit, Musk was expected to reveal plans for Tesla to set up a manufacturing unit in India, potentially involving billions of dollars in investment. Additionally, he was anticipated to discuss the strategy for selling Tesla electric cars in India quickly. Musk has also advocated for a reduction in import duties in India to facilitate the sale of Tesla vehicles in the country.
