Guwahati: Floods in Assam have worsened, affecting more than 2.96 lakh people across 19 districts. The death toll has risen to 35 since May 28, with floodwaters continuing to rise. Additionally, over 2.53 lakh domestic animals have been impacted by the flooding.
Karimganj is the worst-hit district, with 1,52,133 individuals affected and 470 villages submerged across 24 revenue circles. Floods have caused extensive damage to embankments, roads, bridges, and infrastructure in various districts. The Kopili River at Kampur has surpassed the danger mark, exacerbating the situation. Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Tamulpur, Udalguri, Darrang, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Goalpara, Nagaon, Chirang, and Kokrajhar are among the affected districts.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a cabinet meeting on June 19 to discuss relief measures. Minister Dr. Ranuj Pegu assured that the government is prepared to address the flood situation. Hundreds of relief camps have been opened across the state, providing shelter to over 13,000 affected individuals. The meteorological department has issued heavy rain alerts for several districts over the next four days, potentially worsening the flood situation.
Infrastructure damage is significant, with 29 road damage incidents reported across various districts. A bridge in Barpeta district has been compromised, and embankments in Tamulpur, Darrang, and Bongaigaon have been damaged. Urban flooding has affected 21 villages in Kokrajhar, Kamrup, Cachar, Kamrup (M), and Nalbari districts, adding to the challenges faced by residents.
