European Parliamentarians send back crucial draft climate law

BRUSSELS: Members of the European Parliament have referred three draught regulations from the European Commission's "Fit For 55" climate legislation package to Parliament's environment committee (ENVI) for further review.

The proposed legislation were on the reform of the Emissions Trading System (ETS), the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and the Social Climate Fund.  Parliament was supposed to take a stand on legislative proposals aimed at achieving the EU's climate action goals.

The requirements are part of the "Fit for 55" package, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy reliance in the EU while also assisting businesses and individuals in making the transition to a more sustainable economy.

The European Union is pursuing the most ambitious climate goal: to reduce emissions significantly by 2030 and to zero by 2050. However, the European Parliament voted 340 to 265 in favour of rejecting the report on the ETS modification, with 34 abstentions. The rules of procedure in Parliament allow a political group or individual to request that a file be referred back to the committee for further examination.
