Farewell to a Statesman: Top Leaders Attend Manmohan Singh's Last Rites at Nigambodh Ghat

 

NEW DELHI: Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was laid to rest with full state honors at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi. The somber ceremony was attended by prominent leaders from across political parties, paying their final respects to the stalwart of Indian politics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah led the tribute from the ruling government, acknowledging Dr. Singh’s immense contributions to India's economic and political landscape. Members of the Gandhi family, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were also present, underscoring the cross-party admiration for the late leader.

Dr Man Mohan Singh, known for his quiet demeanor as well transformative leadership, served as India's Prime Minister  for a decade from 2004 to 2014. Under his tenure, the country witnessed major economic reforms and significant strides in international relations. His legacy is celebrated not only for his political achievements but also for his integrity and humility.

The funeral procession saw an outpouring of grief, with citizens from all walks of life paying their respects. Political leaders, dignitaries, and well-wishers recalled his pivotal role in steering India through economic liberalization and fostering inclusive growth.

The Indian tricolor was draped over Dr. Singh's body as he was given a ceremonial farewell. The state honors included a 21-gun salute, reflecting the nation's gratitude for his service.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the passing away of Dr. Manmohan Singh, hailing him as one of India’s most respected leaders. In a written tribute, Pprime Minister  Modi remarked, “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble beginnings, he emerged as a respected economist and served in various pivotal roles, including as Finance Minister. His impact on India’s economic policies has been profound, and his insightful interventions in Parliament will always be remembered. As Prime Minister, he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of ordinary citizens.”

Addressing the nation in a televised message, PM Modi emphasized the magnitude of the loss, calling Dr. Singh’s demise “a big loss to the nation.” Reflecting on the late leader's virtues, he said, “Dr. Manmohan Singh was a remarkable parliamentarian whose life epitomized honesty and simplicity. His journey serves as an inspiring lesson in rising above challenges and achieving success through determination and hard work.”

Dr. Manmohan Singh's demise really marks the close of an era in Indian politics. As leaders bid their final goodbye, the unity displayed at the ceremony symbolized the respect he commanded across political and social spheres.
