Fatty liver disease is a silent killer that can lead to several life-threatening health issues. According to recent statistics, every third Indian is suffering from this disease. Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh revealed this alarming fact at a recent conference. Experts warn that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common metabolic disorder that can progress to cirrhosis and primary liver cancer if left unchecked. Most people with fatty liver disease also suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and other related conditions. The liver plays a crucial role in regulating proteins, lipids, and bilirubin in the body. However, when we consume excessive fat and calories and lead a sedentary lifestyle, fat starts accumulating in the liver, leading to fatty liver disease. While this condition is more common among alcoholics, it is also prevalent among non-alcoholics with a high BMI and weight. Causes of Fatty Liver Disease Dr. Jitendra Singh attributed the rising cases of fatty liver disease in India and Europe to changes in lifestyle and diet. The increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome and obesity has led to a surge in NAFLD cases. Surprisingly, people with low body weight are also at risk of developing this disease. Similar to alcoholic liver disease, NAFLD can progress from steatosis to steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer. According to Dr. Singh, approximately 20% of Indians with a low body mass index (BMI) suffer from NAFLD, whereas in Western countries, most cases are linked to obesity. Prevention is Key To combat the growing threat of fatty liver disease, a virtual nodal center was recently launched at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in New Delhi. The center will bring together 11 French and 17 Indian doctors to work on prevention and treatment strategies. To prevent fatty liver disease, experts recommend reducing fat and carbohydrate intake, increasing physical activity, and consulting a doctor for liver fat reduction. In conclusion, fatty liver disease is a serious health concern that requires immediate attention. By adopting a healthy lifestyle and seeking medical advice, we can prevent this disease from progressing to more severe stages. Let us take proactive steps to protect our liver and overall health."
