Massive fire breaks out in house, 5 people of the family charred to death

Kochi: A major accident is being reported in Kerala. Five members of the same family were charred to death in a fire that broke out in a house in Varkala town of the state late on Monday night. The cause of the fire is being ascertained. According to information provided by the police, the fire broke out at Dalavapuram in Varkala around 1.45 pm on Monday.  

The deceased have been identified as 62-year-old Prathpan, 53-year-old Sherly, 25-year-old Abhirami, 29-year-old Akhil and Abhirami's eight-month-old son. Prathpan's elder son Nihul has been badly burnt in this accident and is undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Neighbours reported the fire to the fire department. After receiving the information, fire tenders were immediately sent to the spot.

At least five bikes and air conditioners installed in the house were also gutted in the fire. Officials said that the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Rural Superintendent of Police Divya Gopinath said that something can be said only after forensic experts examine the spot.
