New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has admitted that the general public is constantly troubled by the rising prices of petrol and diesel, along with this, he said that the central and state government will have to sit and talk on this issue and decide together. As fuel is taxed by both governments, Sitharaman said on Friday that people should be relieved from the rising prices of petrol and diesel, but for this, the tax will have to be cut at both the central and state levels. Speaking to presspersons on Friday at the Indian Women's Press Corps (IWPC), Sitharaman said, "People's demand to bring down the prices of petrol and diesel is justified. It is understood that the burden on consumers is increasing, but fixing the price is a difficult issue in itself. That is why I have used the word 'Dharmasankat' for this. This is a question on which the central and state governments should talk together. The central government does not levy tax on petroleum products alone, the states also levy a tax on it.” About 60 percent of the price of petrol goes to the Central and State Governments as tax. At the same time, in the case of diesel, this tax is up to 56 percent. Sitharaman further said that both the central and state governments get revenue from petrol and diesel. 41 percent of the tax collected by the central government goes to the states. In such a situation, it would be appropriate that the Center and the state should discuss this together.
