Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to visit Uzbekistan from September 24 to 28, where she will attend the 9th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). This official visit will also include signing a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) to enhance economic collaboration between India and Uzbekistan, along with participating in the India-Uzbekistan Business Forum. During the AIIB meeting, scheduled for September 25-26 in Samarkand, delegates from around 80 countries and various international organizations will gather. Sitharaman, attending as India’s representative, will meet with the AIIB President and hold discussions with her counterparts from Uzbekistan, Qatar, and China. As India is the second-largest shareholder in the AIIB, Sitharaman’s participation in these multilateral discussions will address a wide range of global issues related to development and infrastructure. The finance ministry highlighted that Sitharaman is also expected to meet with Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during her visit. A key aspect of this trip will be the signing of a Bilateral Investment Treaty with Uzbekistan's Minister for Investment, Industry, and Trade. This treaty aims to foster long-term economic cooperation, benefiting both nations. Sitharaman’s schedule also includes participation in the India-Uzbekistan Business Forum, where business leaders from both countries will discuss avenues for increased collaboration. She will visit key landmarks such as Samarkand State University and the Lal Bahadur Shastri Monument in Tashkent. Additionally, she will engage with the Indian diaspora, acknowledging their contributions across various sectors. AIIB, as a multilateral development bank, focuses on sustainable infrastructure development across Asia. Its mission is to encourage investment in infrastructure and other key sectors to promote sustainable economic growth, wealth creation, and improved connectivity.
