NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to embark on an official visit to Paris, France to participate in the Summit for the New Global Financing Pact, scheduled to take place on June 22-23. This high-profile summit brings together heads of state and government, ministers, leaders of key international organizations, representatives of global financial institutions, as well as private sector and civil society representatives. The Need for Reform in the International Financial System: The timing of this summit is crucial as it addresses the pressing need to reform the international financial system, which has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years since the historic Bretton Woods conference. With France taking the lead, more than 300 prominent figures from around the world will convene to lay the groundwork for a new financial system that is well-suited to the common challenges of the 21st century. These challenges include combating inequalities, addressing climate change, and safeguarding biodiversity. Ambitious Goals to Overcome Financial Challenges: The global financial landscape has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, resulting in an unprecedented increase in public debt across countries. Alarmingly, one-third of developing nations and two-thirds of low-income countries now face the heightened risk of excessive debt. Moreover, the progress made in poverty reduction over the past few decades has come to a standstill. Consequently, there is an urgent need for financial solidarity on a global scale. The primary objective of this summit is to establish a robust international financial architecture capable of providing greater resources to countries in need. This architecture aims to protect the most vulnerable nations from economic shocks, facilitate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reignite long-term poverty reduction efforts, and safeguard critical global public goods like climate and health. In a remarkable display of inclusivity, the French President has extended invitations to Heads of State and Government, leaders of international financial institutions, as well as representatives from civil society and the private sector. This diverse gathering aims to lay the foundations of a new system that can effectively address the shared challenges faced by the global community. France has consistently played the role of an impartial international broker, leveraging its influence to resolve complex issues of global significance. From bridging the funding gap in AIDS research to improving access to financing for middle-income African countries, France has demonstrated its commitment to fostering cooperation and finding innovative solutions. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's participation in the Summit for the New Global Financing Pact underscores the importance of addressing the urgent need for reform in the international financial system. As the world faces unprecedented challenges, this summit presents a unique opportunity to lay the groundwork for a new financial system that promotes sustainability, resilience, and global cooperation.
