Ford gears up for new job cut round amid shift to EVs

SAN FRANCISCO: US automaker Ford is gearing up to reduce its workforce as it prioritizes investments in the production of electric vehicles (EVs). According to The Wall Street Journal, the company is expected to announce a fresh round of layoffs as early as next week. This move comes after Ford laid off approximately 3,000 employees in August of last year.

Ford CEO Jim Farley acknowledges that the automaker has more ground to cover than its competitors when it comes to aligning costs. Consequently, Ford Motor is planning to implement further job cuts in the upcoming weeks as part of its broader strategy to streamline operations and decrease expenses. Insider sources familiar with the matter revealed this information, emphasizing the company's commitment to optimizing its performance.

Collaboration with Tesla and Expansion of Charging Infrastructure - In a recent development, Ford Motor reached an agreement with Tesla, led by CEO Elon Musk. This agreement grants Ford electric vehicle customers access to over 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across the United States and Canada. By spring 2024, the number of fast-chargers available to Ford EV customers will double, resulting in improved convenience and accessibility.

Ford's future plans include offering next-generation electric vehicles, equipped with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector, by 2025. This advancement will eliminate the need for an adapter to access Tesla Superchargers, further simplifying the charging process for Ford EV owners.

In August 2022, Ford laid off approximately 3,000 employees and contract workers, with the majority of the cuts affecting personnel in the United States, Canada, and India. These measures were implemented as part of the company's ongoing efforts to optimize operations and enhance efficiency in response to changing market demands.
