Former Bihar MLA Anant Singh Narrowly Escapes Shooting Incident

PATNA: Former MLA Anant Singh, a prominent figure from Bihar’s Mokama region, narrowly escaped a shooting incident on Wednesday. The attack is believed to have been carried out by the notorious 'Sonu-Monu gang.'

The incident occurred in Nauranga village. Reports suggest a heavy exchange of gunfire between "two groups" during the confrontation.

The altercation took place when Anant Singh, accompanied by his supporters, visited the village under the Panchmahala Panchayat. According to sources, the Sonu-Monu gang had allegedly occupied a house in the area, prompting Singh to step in and attempt to mediate the situation.

Upon arriving at the location, Sonu and Monu reportedly behaved disrespectfully toward Singh and his aides. The situation escalated into a violent clash, with both sides engaging in gunfire.

Following the incident, police teams from five nearby stations rushed to the area and began an investigation. Rakesh Kumar, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Barh Range, confirmed the incident, stating: "We have received a formal complaint, and necessary action will be taken. The clash occurred when Anant Singh visited Nauranga village."

Anant Singh, widely referred to as "Chote Sarkar," is a controversial political figure and former MLA of the Mokama Assembly constituency in Patna district. Known for his influence and history of legal troubles, Singh was recently acquitted in an Arms Act case.

In August 2024, Singh was released from Patna's Beur Jail due to insufficient evidence in a case that had previously earned him a 10-year sentence under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Over the years, Singh has been associated with multiple political parties, including the BJP, JD(U), and RJD. Despite his contentious reputation, he remains a significant figure in the region’s political landscape.

Currently, his wife, Neelam Devi, holds the MLA position for the Mokama Assembly constituency.

Meanwhile, the police investigation into the Nauranga village incident is ongoing. "More details about the confrontation and subsequent measures are awaited," an official said.

However, earlier in August 2024, the high court of Patna acquitted Anant Singh of the criminal charges of illegally possessing an AK47 rifle along with other arms and directed the authorities to release him from jail.
