France: Prez Macron sworn in for second term, pledges to serve all people

President Emmanuel Macron of France will be sworn in for a second term at the Elysee presidential palace on Saturday. Macron was re-elected for a fifth term on April 24, defeating far-right competitor Marine Le Pen in a runoff. Around 500 people are scheduled to attend the ceremony, which will feature the president of the Constitutional Council reading the election results.

Before giving his address, Macron will be presented with the Grand Master of the Legion of Honor necklace, France's highest honour. He will next proceed to the Elysee palace gardens to listen to 21 cannon shots fired from the Invalides square to mark the occasion, as is customary.

Macron will also conduct a military review. Part of the crew of the Monge, the French navy's second-largest ship and a vital component of France's nuclear deterrent, was present at the ceremony. It was most famous for testing France's nuclear-capable submarine-launched M51 missiles.

When France is heavily involved in efforts to stop Russia's conflict against Ukraine, including supplying truck-mounted cannons and other heavy armaments, the emblem can be interpreted as a show of might. Macron's second term will begin on May 14th.
