Gadkari bats for innovation to cut pollution and boost rural jobs

New Delhi: Nitin Gadkari, the Union minister of highways and roads, on Wednesday, May 10, called for innovative solutions to tackle pollution and generate employment in rural and tribal regions.

Speaking at the meeting of industry leaders at the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards ceremony, the Union Minsiter stressed the importance of decentralizing development and constructing sustainable business models.

The minister pushed for the creation of domestic energy technology, electric motorways, and the sustainable use of mining wastelands. He suggested planting bamboo on wastelands in place of imported coal and emphasised the possibilities of ethanol and hydrogen produced from water.

Gadkari said  that implementing a circular economy could considerably decrease manufacturing costs and imports. Copper and aluminium recycling could reduce production costs for auto components by 20–25%.

Over 1,100 companies have filed for the awards over the previous 17 years, with 375 winning over 16 categories and 250 indicators, said Sanjiv Bajaj, president of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). . This year, 79 applications undertook a thorough examination procedure that included on-site evaluations by sustainability assessors who were certified by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), he said.

Gadkari is known for his innovative ideas and has been credited with introducing several reforms in the transport and infrastructure sectors. He has also been a strong advocate for the use of alternative fuels and renewable energy sources.
