Ganapati's Alleged Arrest Sparks Nationwide Outrage and Political Controversy

The alleged arrest of a Lord Ganesha idol during a Ganesh immersion procession in Karnataka has ignited widespread outrage among Hindus. The incident, which took place on September 13 in Congress-ruled Karnataka, saw stones being hurled at participants of the religious procession. Shockingly, instead of arresting those responsible for the attack, police arrested those opposing the violence and seized the Ganesha idol.

The incident has drawn fierce reactions, not only from the Hindu community in Karnataka but also from neighboring Maharashtra, where people have expressed their anger over what is being described as an unprecedented act. This event has sent shockwaves across the country, marking a first of its kind in independent India.

Political Reactions to Ganapati Aarti

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in a Ganapati Aarti also sparked political controversy, with criticism from opposition parties, including Congress and the Mahavikas Aghadi. Meanwhile, Chief Justice of India Dhananjay Chandrachud, a native Marathi speaker, installed a Lord Ganesha idol at his residence, drawing further criticism from some political quarters questioning his credibility due to his involvement in religious activities.

Hindutva activists have taken issue with leaders who, on one hand, host religious events like Iftar parties but oppose Ganapati Aartis. They argue that Hindu festivals are meant to bring communities together and foster affection, but these leaders appear to be overlooking this tradition.

BJP's Response

The BJP was quick to remind Congress of past events, pointing out that in 2009, Manmohan Singh hosted an Iftar party, which was attended by then Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan. BJP leaders, including Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora, criticized Congress for objecting to Modi's participation in the Aarti while allowing other religious events in the past.

Controversial Remarks at Sambhaji Brigade Event

At a recent Sambhaji Brigade event, controversial remarks were made about Hindu deities Prabhu Sri Ramachandra and Swami Samarth. These derogatory comments were reportedly met with laughter from Congress leaders Sharad Pawar and Shahu Maharaj, who were present at the event.

The very next day, Sharad Pawar visited the Raja of Lalbagh, likely in an attempt to mitigate the damage caused by the incident. Observers noted that while he is often seen attending Iftar parties, his participation in Hindu religious events like Wari or visits to Raigad is rare.

These political reactions, combined with divisive statements from various leaders, have intensified tensions, highlighting the rift between religious traditions and political strategies in India.

The incident involving the alleged arrest of the Ganesha idol has deeply hurt the sentiments of Hindus and continues to fuel debates about the intersection of religion and politics in the country.
