General situation in N.Ethiopia calm but unpredictable: UN `

UNITED NATIONS: The overall situation in conflict-torn northern Ethiopia is generally peaceful but volatile and unpredictable, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

According to reports, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said on Friday that humanitarian partners have continued to move additional humanitarian supplies into the northernmost conflict-ridden Tigray region, with three convoys of 319 trucks arriving in the regional capital Mekelle during the reporting week.

According to the report, the humanitarian assistance convoy was the largest group of vehicles to visit the region in a single week since June 2021. As per United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, more than 9 million people in the region require food aid, and food assistance will be necessary until 2022.

Farmers in Northern Ethiopia desperately want seeds and fertilisers, according to the report, as the country's major planting season, which runs from May to early July, will begin soon.

Failure to provide critical agriculture inputs during the planting window, according to the UN, could lower crop yield by at least half, from an expected 9.6 million metric tonnes to 4 million metric tonnes, worsening Tigray's present high levels of food poverty.  It also stressed the importance of rebuilding and rehabilitating schools that have been devastated by the fighting in portions of Amhara, Tigray, and Afar.
