Germany introduces tightens Covid-19 curbs before New Year

BERLIN – In a bid to slow the spread of the Omicron coronavirus strain, Germany has tightened restrictions for vaccinated and recovered people across the country.

On Tuesday, Germany revealed the Covid restrictions. Unvaccinated people can meet together with up to two other external people per household, while vaccinated and recovered people can get together with up to ten other people. These restrictions do not apply to children under the age of 14. New Year's Eve parties and the selling of fireworks in the last days of the year will be prohibited across the country.

The number of confirmed Omicron variant infections in Germany surged by 45 percent in a single day, bringing the total to 10,443, according to the Robert Koch Institute for Infectious Diseases (RKI).

According to the RKI, the majority of the country's laboratory-confirmed Omicron cases were in the 15 to 34-year-old age group, followed by 35 to 59-year-olds. "The goal is to vaccinate in a timely and efficient manner so that we can hold the impending Omicron wave at bay as much as possible before building up sufficient immunity in the population," a Ministry of Health spokesperson said on Monday.
