Following the announcement of the Google News Initiative (GNI) Startups Lab, Google announced the names of ten startups that will make up the first cohort of the GNI Startups Lab on Wednesday. The GNI Startups Lab is a 16-week accelerator programme aimed at assisting the next generation of independent Indian news startups in achieving financial and operational viability. The GNI Startups Lab India was founded in collaboration with the GNI, global innovation lab Echos, and DIGIPUB News India Foundation to support high-quality reporting for local and previously underserved communities. "The ten news startups were chosen from over 70 applicants from across India and cover a wide range of types of journalism, including investigative, broadcast, political, data, and local news organisations that give a voice to underrepresented communities," said Kate Beddoe, Director, News Partnerships, APAC. "The diverse cohort includes newsrooms from across the country," Beddoe said, "producing news in languages such as English, Hindi, Malayalam, and Urdu." "Our mission is to bring the voices of women and gender-diverse people to the forefront of the media, where they are frequently relegated to footnotes," BehanBos said. The top ten startups include Bisbo, BehanBox, East Mojo, ED Times, Headline Network, ED Times, Main Media, Suno India, The Bridge, The Cue and The Probe.
