A warning related to the online campaign for all citizens has been issued by the Government of India's Cyber Security body CERT-In, in which fake emails from the Indian Income Tax Department are being sent to the people. All citizens take emails from the Income Tax Department seriously, hackers are taking advantage of this and with such fake mail, malware is working to access people's systems.

According to the recent report of Cert, income tax is mentioned in the subject line of such emails to trap people. The subject of such mail can be 'Important: Income Tax Outstanding Statements AY 2017-2018' or 'Income Tax statement'. Such fake emails have been sent to many people around 12 September. They were not sent by the Income Tax Department and their aim is only to make people their victims. It is important that no untrusted email is opened and no attachment is downloaded by mistake.

Most of such fake income tax emails have been sent with the domain name 'incometaxindia [.] Info'. Cert found that these fake emails are being sent in two ways. The first type of mail shows an attachment when users open mail, which comes with an .img extension and also has a malicious .pif file hidden in it. At the same time, other types of fake email users are asked to download a .pif file with the help of SharePoint page by sending a link to a fraud domain incometaxindia.info.

In its statement, Cert-in says that the purpose of such emails is to steal people's personal data. The malicious .pif file given in the attachment follows a command and controls the server to make changes to the Windows registry. After this, it tries to steal the personal information of the user. This campaign is similar to the 'Ave-Maria' malware that surfaced, which came with DLL hijacking and could bypass advanced detection methods as well as gain advanced admin access. This malware also has the ability to secretly download dangerous plugins and malicious content.
