Government will form expert panels to investigate the use of standard chargers.

Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said on Wednesday that the government will form expert committees to investigate the adoption of standard chargers for mobile and all portable electronic devices and submit a thorough report in two months.

The secretary stated that India can initially consider examining switching to two types of chargers, including a C-Type connector, after the discussion with industry stakeholders.

“It is a complex issue. India has a position in the manufacturing of chargers. We have to understand everybody’s perspective — industry, the users, manufacturers and environment — before taking a final decision,” he said told reporters.

Each stakeholder has a unique perspective, and expert groups will be established to look at those concerns independently, he said.

Separate expert groups will be established to investigate the charging ports used by three categories of electronic devices: mobile and feature phones, laptops and ipads, and wearables.

The organisations will be informed this month, and they have two months to submit their proposals, he said. Although the sector-specific associations and manufacturers agreed to the concerns of e-waste but sought more discussion on the matter, he added.

The meeting was attended by Ajai Chowdhury, founder of the Electronics Products Innovation Consortium (EPIC) Foundation and HCL, as well as Rajkumar Rishi, president of the Manufacturers' Association of Information Technology (MAIT), Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman of the India Cellular and Electronic Association (ICEA), Eric Braganza, president of the Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA), and Vipul Ray, president of the Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers

Hari Om Rai, the chairman and managing director of Lava International Ltd, together with leaders from the trade associations FICCI, CII, Assocham, IIT Kanpur, and IIT BHU, were also present at the hybrid conference.
