New Delhi: A new twist has come in the case of Shabnam of Amroha, who is set to become the first woman in the country to be sentenced to death. Governor Anandiben Patel has now intervened in Shabnam's case. Shabnam's death sentence could be commuted to life imprisonment. Governor Anandiben Patel has handed over the case to the UP government on an application seeking change of sentence.
On the directions of Governor Anandi Ben Patel, his special secretary Badri Nath Singh handed over the case to the principal secretary of the UP prisons department. He has directed that a proper decision be taken in this matter as per rules. In fact, Sahar Naqvi, a woman lawyer of the Allahabad High Court, had filed the application before Governor Anandi Ben Patel on which the Governor's Secretariat has referred the matter to the head of the prison department.
Sahar Naqvi had sent an application to the governor seeking commute of Shabnam's death sentence to life imprisonment. Sahar Naqvi, being a woman, had demanded a change in the death sentence. The petition said that no woman has been hanged in the country till date. The petition argued that shabnam's execution would tarnish the country's image in the world. The manner of punishment in Shabnam's crime can be changed. In 2008, Shabnam killed seven members of his own family to marry his boyfriend Salim.
