The government has not conducted any study to assess the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on suicides in the country, said the Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai on Tuesday in the Lok Sabha. The ministry said that the government, however, has taken a number of initiatives during the pandemic to provide psychological support to people. It was said, while Questions were raised in Lok Sabha, whether the Government has conducted any study or proposes to conduct a study to find out the factors responsible for the increase of suicide cases in rural areas after the COVID pandemic in various parts of the country. He said, on the other hand, realising the impact that COVID-19 may have on the mental health of the people, the government has taken a number of initiatives to provide psychosocial support during COVID 19," in a written reply to Lok Sabha. He further said these initiatives include setting up of a round-the-clock helpline to provide psychosocial support, by mental health professionals, to the entire affected population, divided into different target groups like children, adults, elderly, women and healthcare workers.
