Gujarat Government permission to ITI in Sabarmati jail

Now, Gujarat will become the first state to provide full fledged industrial training institute (ITI) to the prisoners inside the jail premises.  The Sabarmati Central Jail will soon serve ITI education to the convict.  And jail authorities will now begin finalizing recruitment of staff and admitting inmate students. Formalities are expected to be completed within a month. It is remarkable that there are about 2,700 prisoners in Sabarmati Central Jail, including about 1,300 convicts. According to jail authorities about 200 convicts and under trials are currently pursuing correspondence courses from the jail for degrees.

Sunil Joshi, the superintendent of Sabarmati Jail said "In the first stage, convicts will be considered for admission in eight different courses including wireman, masonry, mobile phone repairing, and plumbing, which will be taught at the ITI," added Joshi. He added that the ITI will be accommodated within the jail premises. "The formalities for staff selection will be finalized soon. The teaching staff will either be selected by the government or by the jail authorities, whatever the government decides".

Jail officials said they will invite admission forms from the prisoners and then give them admission to the ITI.

"It will function just like any other ITI. It will start in the morning with prisoners getting theory lectures, and also undergoing practical training at the laboratory inside the jail premises. The institute will start in a months' time," Joshi added.
