LAHORE: Hamza Shehbaz, the son of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, was sworn in as Chief Minister of Punjab state on Saturday after winning re-election. Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman, clad in a black sherwani, gave the oath at the Governor's House in Lahore. Notably, Hamza received 179 votes, while Pervaiz Elahi, a joint candidate of former Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and the Pakistan Muslim League (PML), received 176 votes, deputy speaker Dost Mazari revealed late Friday night. Elahi received 186 votes, including 176 from the PTI and 10 from the PML, however, the deputy speaker disqualified the PML's 10 votes when its leader, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, issued a letter to his party members urging them not to vote for Elahi. This is Hamza's second victory over Elahi in the race for Punjab Chief Minister. The poll was called on the orders of Pakistan's Supreme Court after the PTI petitioned the apex court, claiming that Hamza had lost the majority in the house. He was chosen as the next Chief Minister of Punjab on April 16 with 197 votes, including 25 PTI dissidents. On May 20, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) deserted 25 PTI provincial assembly members for voting for Hamza in the election against the party leadership's directives.
